Pump-cap quality is checked with a defined combination of measurements and observations rather than one torque value. A practical plan can include closure presence, square seating, cap height, thread engagement, required actuator direction or lock state, removal torque under controlled conditions, leakage or seal checks, dispensing function and cosmetic condition. The exact method must match the bottle, pump and product risk.
Why is torque only one part of pump-closure acceptance?
Torque describes resistance to rotation under a defined method; it does not by itself prove that the collar is on the correct thread, seated to the intended height, leak-free, correctly oriented or cosmetically acceptable. A tilted closure can sometimes produce a high reading because the threads or collar are damaged.

How should cap height be used?
Cap height can be used as a non-destructive process check when the bottle has a stable datum and a correctly seated pump produces a repeatable measurement. It is particularly useful for identifying incomplete seating, tilt or unexpected component variation.
Measure known good and known defective packs to establish whether height actually separates them. Define the datum, instrument, point of contact and allowable result for each format. Do not transfer one format’s height limit to another bottle or pump without evidence.
Which checks are non-destructive and which alter the pack?
Presence, seating, height, direction and appearance are normally non-destructive when performed carefully. Removal torque opens the closure and changes the pack; leakage or dispensing tests may also consume product or alter the pump. Some functional tests can introduce product into the pump mechanism.
Classify each check before setting the sample plan. Non-destructive checks can be used more frequently, while destructive or product-altering checks need retained samples, controlled disposition and a frequency justified by the quality system.
What should a pump-capping quality record contain?
The record should identify the bottle and pump format, component batch, machine or station, settings or recipe, time since capping, measurement method, instrument, result, acceptance limit and disposition. It should also capture relevant visual observations, actuator state and any intervention during the run.
Link the result to trial conditions such as filled weight, product or ballast and line speed. A value without the method and format cannot be compared reliably with another run or used to diagnose a later fault.
